Most significant of all in villa architecture, is the center tile of the portal or front door. In Buster's case, this is represented by a "gryphon displayed" with a shield or blank tablature. The gryphon is the symbol of the union of earth and sky (very appropriate for a stunt man or acrobat, who must be equally at home in either element!) and is also the symbol of the Hero. Apollo rode on a gryphon. The gryphon also guards the family gold and is a symbol of nobility. It tells us that the owner of this house is a self-made man, who has worked hard to get what he has and will work hard to preserve it. The two wrought-iron lamps, which feature the heads of dragons, are another symbol of protection and wealth.
